Afenyo-Markin: “Facts First, Even If It Costs Friends”

Politics often feels like a loud shouting match, but Ghana’s Minority Leader is taking a quieter approach. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin believes you can argue fiercely without burning bridges. He insists that respect should always stay in the room, even when tempers flare.

He recently shared his approach to handling tough debates with reporters. He wants lawmakers to keep their reactions focused on policy instead of personal attacks. After all, today’s opposition could easily be running the country tomorrow.

He knows this stance might cost him some friendships, but he refuses to back down from hard truths. “If, for instance, stating the facts will cost relationships, I am ready for it,” he explained. He also promised to stay careful about how he delivers that honest feedback.

The real lesson here is about leaving room for future teamwork. If leaders keep their language measured now, they will get the same grace later. It’s a simple habit that could actually make government work better for everyone.
