A 30-year-old mason from Mpasatia is facing serious legal trouble after an early morning break-in at a local store. Solomon Wereko has been remanded by the Nkawie Circuit Court on charges of unlawful entry, causing damage, and stealing. The incident has left the community reflecting on the security of their local businesses.
The situation unfolded on the dawn of April 4, 2026, when a trader named Asor Gyamfi sent her two sons on an errand. Upon arriving at their mother’s shop, the boys noticed something strange: lights that had been turned off the night before were now glowing. Their curiosity led them closer, where they discovered Wereko already inside the premises.
Police Inspector Kwaku Frimpong explained that Wereko allegedly climbed a nearby lotto kiosk to gain access. By damaging the kiosk and entering through the shop’s front roof, he was able to break the padlock and enter. He’s accused of taking 14 bottles of liquid soap, 30 pairs of gloves, three electrical cables, and five pairs of socks, totaling GHS 1,160.
While Wereko admitted to the unlawful entry in his caution statement, he has pleaded not guilty to the theft and damage charges. He remains in prison custody as the legal process moves forward. The court, presided over by Robert Addo, has set his next appearance for April 22, 2026.
This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by small-scale traders in the Ashanti Region. The loss of GHS 1,160 may seem small to some, but for a local business owner, it represents a significant blow to their daily livelihood. The community now awaits the court’s final decision on Wereko’s guilt.
