Oliver Baker-Vormawor: Ken Ofori-Atta Released on $65,000 Bond

Recent revelations have cast a new light on the legal struggles of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in the United States. Activist Oliver Baker-Vormawor has brought forward claims that the former minister is no longer in custody, though his freedom comes with strict strings attached. This development adds a layer of complexity to a case that continues to draw significant attention in Ghana.

The situation centers on Ofori-Atta’s current legal standing within the US justice system. While the specifics of the case remain a point of intense public interest, the focus has shifted toward his physical presence and legal status in America. The intersection of health concerns and flight risks has created a delicate legal balancing act for the courts.

According to Baker-Vormawor, information from the US Department of Justice indicates that Ofori-Atta was released on a $65,000 bond. He noted that the former minister is under electronic monitoring and must report to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, stating, “I have been looking a bit more into the whole Ken Ofori-Atta debacle.” He also highlighted an upcoming immigration hearing scheduled for April 27.

The most pressing question now is why Ghana’s extradition request remains unanswered after three months. Baker-Vormawor expressed frustration over the delay, asking, “What I still don’t understand is why the US authorities are sitting on Ghana’s extradition request?” He believes the Attorney-General’s department has fulfilled all requirements, leaving the delay unexplained.

The activist suggests that the hold-up may be political rather than procedural, pointing toward the US State Department. He has called on Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister to step in and seek clarity on the matter. He explicitly stated, “The obstruction seems to be coming from the US State Department. I hope our Foreign Minister will ask them for answers.”
