GTA Unveils Bold Tourism Strategy to Transform Volta Region into Global Investment Hub

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has launched an ambitious strategic roadmap to position the Volta Region as a premier frontier for economic tourism.

Speaking at the 2025 Volta Investment Summit in Ho on December 4, 2025, she characterized the region as a “stronghold of economic tourism,” emphasizing that its unique mix of waterfalls, sacred groves, and vibrant festivals are now being repositioned as high-value assets for sustainable growth.

Priority Pillars of the 2025 Strategy

The CEO outlined three core areas designed to move the region from potential to prosperity:

  • Sustainable Eco-Tourism: The plan focuses on responsible development of sites like the Wli Waterfalls, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, and various mountain ranges. The goal is to create community-led economic models where local youth are not just workers but primary stakeholders in travel services, eco-lodges, and artisanal crafts.
  • Digital Visibility & Innovation: Under the new Ghana Tourism Information System (GTIS), the GTA is launching seven digital projects to modernize the industry. These include a national licensing portal, a cashless “Experience Ghana” booking platform, and a virtual touring application to showcase undiscovered sites to the global diaspora.
  • Collaborative Investment Models: The GTA is currently in advanced negotiations for high-impact projects, including paragliding infrastructure and green hotels. These projects are anchored in the 24-Hour Economy policy, which seeks to extend business hours to maximize productivity and job creation.

The CEO highlighted the recent resumption of the Delta Air Lines Accra–Atlanta route as a pivotal development for the region.

Launched on December 2, 2025, after a 13-year hiatus, this direct connection is expected to significantly increase visitor arrivals from the U.S. southern states, many of whom have deep cultural ties to the Volta Region.

This “gateway” effect is seen as a major win for the “December in GH” campaign and long-term investment into the region’s hospitality sector.
