Sunon Asogli denies receiving $30 million payment from Controller

Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited has revealed that it has not yet received any portion of a promised $30 million payment from the government, despite public assurances from the Ministry of Finance.

Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, the company’s Business Development Manager, clarified that while the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) initially pledged to disburse the funds in several tranches starting in October, no money has been transferred as of late November.

This financial delay continues to hinder the independent power producer’s operations, following the shutdown of its 560MW plant over a massive $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana.

The company has expressed frustration with the Ministry of Finance, particularly after the Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, publicly announced the directive for payment while accusing the power producer of acting in bad faith.

Dr. Apetorgbor countered these claims by suggesting that the Ministry should verify the actual status of fund transfers before making public statements, noting that the promised tranches were supposed to be integrated with the civil service salary payment schedule. As the dispute continues, the lack of realized funding remains a critical obstacle to restoring full power generation capacity from the Sunon Asogli facility.
