Ghana officially opens its market to US pork and pork products export

The Ghanaian government has formally authorized the entry of pork and several other meat products from the United States into the local market. This development follows an official agreement between Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), specifically accepting export certificates that cover poultry, beef, lamb, and goat in addition to pork.

While the Ghanaian meat market has historically been dominated by European suppliers, U.S. officials view this new access as a major opportunity to tap into a sector that was valued at approximately $16 million in 2021 and has shown consistent growth in import volumes.

The decision sparked immediate debate within Ghana, as local agricultural groups expressed concern that an influx of American products might undermine domestic farmers.

In response, the Ministry clarified that the certification is a standard professional procedure under international animal health guidelines rather than an attempt to overwhelm the local industry. Despite these domestic tensions, U.S. consumer-oriented exports to Ghana have surged, reaching an estimated $125 million by 2024.

This trend highlights a growing demand for high-value food products among Ghana’s expanding urban population and a preference for the quality standards associated with U.S. agricultural goods.

As of late 2025, the partnership continues to evolve within the framework of broader trade dynamics, including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). While local pig farmers are being encouraged to modernize through new government support programs, the availability of U.S. pork is expected to diversify options for the hospitality and retail sectors.

Authorities maintain that the focus remains on ensuring food security and maintaining rigorous health screenings for all incoming shipments to protect both consumers and the local economy.
