Teacher dies by suspected suicide after reportedly losing money in Aviator

Kevin Omwenga, a Chemistry and Mathematics teacher at Nyamira Boys High School in Kenya, was found dead in his home in an apparent suicide.

According to Area Assistant Chief Johnson Manyara, Omwenga’s colleagues reported that the educator was struggling with significant debt totaling approximately Ksh50,000 ($380). Much of this debt was reportedly incurred after he borrowed money from fellow teachers and lost it playing the Aviator online betting game.

The school’s principal, George Onkundi, noted that while Omwenga was not yet employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), he had been a dedicated staff member under the Board of Management (BOM) for four years.

The principal remarked that Omwenga had not shown visible signs of distress before his disappearance. Concerns grew when he failed to report for work and stopped answering his phone, leading colleagues to check his residence.

Upon arriving at his house and receiving no response, teachers looked through a window and discovered Omwenga’s body. At the time of the incident, his wife and their one-year-old child were away visiting his ailing mother. Local police and administrators were called to the scene, and the body was moved to Nyamira Referral Hospital.
