The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has intensified its security operations ahead of the festive peak, resulting in the arrest of 132 suspects and the seizure of numerous motorcycles and suspected stolen items.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Regional Public Relations Officer, announced on Tuesday that these targeted swoops are part of a coordinated strategy to suppress criminal activity during the Christmas season. The operations, which spanned several jurisdictions across the metropolis, led to the recovery of various exhibits, including suspected narcotics and property believed to have been illegally acquired.
Specific exercises were highlighted across different police divisions. On December 18, the Kotobabi District conducted a sweep near the Merciful Hotel Annex, apprehending four individuals.2 This was followed by a major operation on December 21 by the Railways District Command, which targeted known criminal hideouts and resulted in 15 arrests.
Additionally, a specialized motor traffic exercise was carried out on December 19 in the East Legon and Airport areas. This particular operation led to the impounding of 36 motorcycles as part of an effort to reduce both street crime and road traffic accidents.3 While some riders with minor infractions received warnings, others are currently being processed for legal action.
Currently, all 132 detainees are undergoing a rigorous screening process. Superintendent Obeng clarified that individuals linked to specific crimes will be arraigned before the court, while those cleared of wrongdoing will be released. Recovered materials have been secured for evidence, with some items destined for the Police Forensic Laboratory for detailed analysis.
The Command has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining public order and has urged residents to assist by providing credible information to ensure a safe environment for all citizens throughout the holidays.
