Ashanti Region Crackdown: 380 Drivers Arrested Over Illegal Christmas Fare Hikes

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced the arrest of 380 commercial drivers for charging passengers fees that exceed the legally approved rates. This enforcement operation, which commenced in November 2025, is part of a strategic effort to protect commuters from exploitation during the high-demand Christmas season.

To further assist travelers, the Regional Coordinating Council is currently negotiating with the Ministry of Transport to secure a fleet of additional buses to ease the pressure on public transportation throughout the festive period.

In tandem with regional efforts, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has mobilized a specialized task force to monitor the city’s roads and conduct random spot checks on commercial vehicles. According to KMA Public Relations Officer Henrietta Afia Konadu, this task force is acting on a direct order from the Kumasi Mayor to ensure strict adherence to official fare schedules.

Drivers found violating these regulations are being cautioned that they will face the full legal consequences of their actions. Both regional and city authorities have emphasized that these rigorous measures are essential for maintaining public order and have encouraged passengers to proactively report any instances of overcharging.
