BoG Governor Johnson Asiama to Open 3i Africa Golf Invitational

Golf and high-level finance are converging this May at the Achimota Golf Club. Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama will perform the ceremonial tee-off for the 3i Africa Invitational Golf Tournament on May 5, 2026. It’s more than just a game; the event serves as the official curtain-raiser for the 3i Africa Summit in Accra.

The tournament sets the stage for the main summit, which runs from May 6 to 8 at the Destiny Arena. This year’s theme, “Shaping Africa’s Integrated FinTech Future,” focuses on how digital finance can drive real impact across the continent. The summit has quickly grown in stature, with its 2024 debut drawing over 8,000 attendees, including three heads of state and 13 central bank governors.

Over 120 amateur golfers from across Africa will compete in an 18-hole contest, providing a relaxed space for policymakers and investors to network. During the summit’s launch, Governor Asiama called for “stronger collaboration to drive financial innovation across Africa.” He stressed that the continent’s growth must shift from “isolated progress toward interconnected ecosystems built on interoperable payment systems and coherent regulatory frameworks.”

By bringing together corporate executives and innovators on the green before moving to the conference hall, organizers hope to foster the kind of trust needed for systemic change. The collaboration between the Bank of Ghana, GhIPSS, and the Global Finance and Technology Network suggests a unified push toward a more integrated financial landscape. These informal conversations often lay the groundwork for the formal agreements made during the summit.

The event is being managed by Head of State Golf Tournament Inc., with support from several key financial institutions. Following the competition, a special lunch will lead into a closing ceremony to honor the top performers. It’s a strategic blend of sport and diplomacy designed to accelerate Africa’s digital financial evolution.
