Elon Musk Rebrands Twitter as ‘X’

Elon Musk has officially initiated a massive rebranding of Twitter, replacing its iconic bird logo with the letter “X” as part of his vision to transform the social media site into an “everything app.”

CEO Linda Yaccarino described “X” as a future global marketplace powered by AI that will integrate audio, video, messaging, and financial services.

While the legal name was changed to X Corp earlier this year, the physical transition began recently with the redirecting of the X.com domain and a short-lived attempt to remove the signage from the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

The move signals Musk’s long-standing ambition to create a Western equivalent to China’s WeChat, a “super-app” that handles everything from social networking to banking. Musk has a deep history with the letter “X,” dating back to his first startup in 1999 and appearing in his other ventures like SpaceX, Tesla’s Model X, and his new AI firm, xAI.

Analysts suggest that the rebrand indicates Musk plans to hold onto the company for the long term, moving away from previous speculation that he might quickly flip the platform to a new owner.

However, the path to becoming an “everything app” faces significant hurdles. Experts point out that Twitter currently operates with a “skeleton team” after massive layoffs and lacks the multibillion-dollar cloud infrastructure required to support a global financial and commerce hub.

Furthermore, while Musk believes a superior product requires little advertising, the platform remains heavily dependent on major brands that may be alienated by the sudden abandonment of a world-famous brand identity.
