Ghana Becomes Leading Mango Supplier to UK as Global Exports Surge to $64 Million

Ghana experienced a significant surge in its mango export sector between 2020 and 2021, with the industry growing by 28% to reach a total valuation of $64.6 million. According to data from the Ghana Exports Promotion Authority (GEPA), this upward trend moved the country to the 11th position among global mango exporters, representing a 1.7% share of the worldwide market.

Ghana’s performance was particularly dominant in the United Kingdom, where it emerged as the largest supplier, contributing to a substantial portion of the UK’s $230 million import market. Other key European destinations included Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and France, with the top four European importers together accounting for more than 91% of Ghana’s total mango export value.

Beyond its traditional European strongholds, there is vast potential for Ghana to diversify its reach into a global market that reached a value of over $4.1 billion in 2021. While the United States and China represent the largest global importers, Ghana is currently exploring new frontiers in Russia, Spain, and Hong Kong due to their favorable growth rates and tariff structures.

Despite high tariffs and the logistical challenges of distance, the Chinese market remains an attractive target for Ghanaian exporters because of its explosive growth, having expanded from roughly $167 million to over $774 million in just four years.

By late 2025, Ghana has made significant strides in this diversification strategy, successfully launching direct “Fruit-Freight” routes to North America and increasing its cold-chain infrastructure to meet the stringent quality standards of the Chinese market.

The integration of advanced agricultural technologies and pest-resistant mango varieties has also allowed Ghanaian farmers to extend their harvest seasons, ensuring a more consistent supply to these emerging global hubs throughout 2025.
