Ghana Police Arrest Nigerian Lady for Wearing Police Uniforms

A viral social media video often sparks a trend, but in this case, it sparked a police operation. Esther Obasi, a Nigerian national, has been arrested after appearing in videos dressed as a member of the Ghana Police Service. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how digital footprints can lead authorities directly to a suspect’s door.

The situation began when footage of Obasi circulating online caught the attention of law enforcement. She wasn’t merely wearing a costume; she was seen in both official camouflage and the standard black police uniform. This level of impersonation quickly created a wave of public concern across the country.

The Ghana Police confirmed the arrest through a statement captioned “Police arrest Nigerian national seen in viral videos wearing police uniforms”. They explained that “The IGP’s special cyber vetting and enforcement team (CVET) of the Ghana police intercepted viral videos of a female, identified as Esther Obasi, a Nigerian national dressed in official Ghana police camouflage and standard black police uniform”. This specialized team tracked her movements until they located her in the Prestea area of the Western Region.

This case goes beyond a simple wardrobe choice, touching on the serious security risks associated with impersonation. The Ghana Police noted that “The videos raised public outrage and concerns regarding the unauthorized use and abuse of police uniforms and impersonation”. When the line between a civilian and an officer blurs, it can erode public trust and create dangerous misunderstandings.

The investigation also revealed a lapse in internal discipline within the force. Authorities discovered that the uniform Obasi wore belonged to an actual officer. The Ghana Police stated that “The Police officer whose uniform was used was also identified and would be dealt with internally”.
