Ghana’s Black Damsels Win CAF African Schools Championship in Zimbabwe

Ghana’s Under-15 girls, known as the Black Damsels, have secured the 2026 CAF African Schools Football Championship title in Zimbabwe. The victory came after a nail-biting final against Burkina Faso that only a penalty shootout could resolve. It’s a landmark achievement that cements their status as a dominant force in youth football.

This wasn’t an easy path to the trophy, as the team had to overcome a previous setback against the same opponents. After losing to Burkina Faso during the group stages, the Damsels showed remarkable grit to fight their way back to the final. Their ability to bounce back from defeat speaks volumes about the mental toughness of these young athletes.

The final match remained goalless through 40 minutes of intense play, eventually pushing the contest into sudden death. Ghana held their nerve to win the shootout 10-9, completing a successful revenge mission. Earlier in the tournament, they displayed their quality with a 6-0 rout of Guinea and a hard-fought win over Tanzania.

Along with the silverware, Ghana earns $300,000, while Burkina Faso takes home $200,000 as runners-up. These funds aren’t just prizes; CAF has specified that the money must go toward grassroots football and education projects. This ensures the win benefits the wider community of young players across the country.

The tournament has grown rapidly since Patrice Motsepe launched it in Maputo in 2022. It has already reached over 1.9 million young players across 46 different countries. For the Black Damsels, this win is a sign that Ghana’s investment in youth development is paying off.
