Komenda Sugar Factory to be commissioned by end of 2022 – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has recently reaffirmed that the Komenda Sugar Factory is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year, a commitment he shared while inspecting the facility during a tour of the Central Region.

This latest timeline follows a previous assurance from February 2022, where a target for April of that year was set but ultimately passed without the factory beginning full operations.

The factory, which was originally inaugurated by former President John Mahama in 2016, has remained largely inactive, leading to ongoing frustration among local residents who have seen their livelihoods stagnate. Management has consistently pointed to a severe lack of raw sugarcane as the primary reason the plant has remained under lock and key.

To rectify this, the government is focusing on establishing stable supply chains to ensure that once the factory is commissioned, it has the consistent inputs needed to sustain production.

The revival of the plant is seen as a critical step for the region’s economy, as it is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while reducing Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported sugar. As the end-of-year deadline approaches, the focus remains on completing the final technical touches and securing enough raw material to prevent the facility from returning to a state of dormancy.
