The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has issued an urgent public notice regarding plans to conduct a mass burial for approximately 320 unclaimed, unknown, and unidentified bodies.
This decision comes as the hospital’s mortuary faces critical congestion, having reached its maximum holding capacity. Authorities stated that the exercise is essential to restore proper operational standards and ensure the facility can continue to provide sanitary and efficient services to the public.
The hospital has provided a 21-day grace period, effective from the notice date of December 22, for families and next of kin to identify and claim their deceased relatives. The deadline for these arrangements is set for January 18, 2026. Management emphasized that this action adheres to standard public health regulations and legal protocols governing the management of unclaimed remains.
This exercise will be conducted in close collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to ensure all legal and environmental requirements are met. KBTH has appealed for public cooperation during this sensitive period, noting that any remains not cleared by the deadline will be interred according to approved state protocols.
Anyone who believes a missing relative may be at the facility is encouraged to contact the hospital administration immediately for verification.
