Kumasi Mayor orders traders to vacate Ahodwo–Asokwa interchange by Jan. 4

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, has delivered a final ultimatum to traders and businesses operating between the Asokwa Interchange and the Ahodwo Roundabout, ordering them to vacate the premises by January 4, 2026.

This directive is a critical step in facilitating the expansion of the Southern Bypass, specifically the dualization of the road section connecting Ahodwo and Asokwa. The Mayor warned that city authorities are prepared to carry out forced evictions if the corridor is not cleared voluntarily by the deadline.

The decision to expand the road comes as the current single carriageway has become a major source of traffic congestion, hindering travel across the Ashanti Region. By transforming this stretch into a dual carriageway, the Department of Urban Roads aims to alleviate the bottlenecks that plague commuters during peak hours. Engineers have emphasized that the presence of unauthorized structures and trading activities poses a direct risk to the construction schedule and the safety of the workers already on-site.

During a recent site inspection, the Mayor personally met with affected operators to explain the necessity of the project and the urgency of their relocation.

He made it clear that because the contractor has already commenced work, the city cannot tolerate any further delays. “The work must move forward as scheduled,” the Mayor noted, reaffirming that the modernization of Kumasi’s road infrastructure is a top priority for the local government.
