In a significant shift for the Ghanaian telecommunications landscape, the National Communications Authority (NCA) granted conditional approval in January 2023 for the transfer of Vodafone’s 70% majority stake in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited to the Telecel Group.
This decision followed an earlier rejection of Telecel’s bid. The NCA initially cited a failure to meet regulatory thresholds but reversed its stance after Telecel resubmitted a revised proposal in December 2022.
This updated plan provided greater clarity on funding and included firm commitments to expand 4G network deployment and introduce innovative Fintech solutions across the country.
The entry of Telecel is viewed as a strategic move to challenge the market dominance of MTN Ghana by focusing heavily on digital inclusion and mobile financial services.
CEO Patricia Obo-Nai, who stayed on to lead the new entity, emphasized that the shift represents a “positive disruption” intended to enhance the customer experience through high-speed connectivity and revamped digital apps like Telecel Play.
