Outcry over raids on civilians in South Sudan capital

Residents and foreign nationals in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, have reported instances of harassment during unannounced raids conducted by the military.

According to the local NGO Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, over 120 individuals have filed formal complaints alleging that security forces stormed homes and businesses without prior notice.

These reports include accounts of soldiers searching the vehicles and accommodations of foreigners and dignitaries.

In response to the public outcry, the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces issued an apology on Thursday. Major General Lul Ruai Koang specifically extended apologies to diplomats, UN staff, and NGO members for the inconveniences caused during the exercise.

Despite the complaints, the military has defended the operations as a success, reporting the seizure of thousands of weapons, including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and machetes.
