Sam George: One Million Coders Laptops Struggle to Boot During Launch

A high-profile launch for the one million coders programme took an unexpected turn when the hardware failed to perform. During a presentation by the Communications Ministry, the laptops intended for trainees struggled to boot for nearly five minutes. This technical glitch left observers wondering if the tools provided are truly fit for purpose.

The initiative aims to equip a massive number of citizens with essential coding skills to boost the digital economy. Bringing the media in to witness the commissioning was meant to showcase the government’s commitment to tech education. However, the anticipation turned into silence as the screens remained dark.

Minister Sam George attempted to manage the situation by explaining the device’s features while waiting for the system to load. He explained, ”There we go, this is how the laptops are. When you turn it on, they are customized. Like I said they are factory firmware so instead of seeing your windows backdrop these are the things you’ll see. So that you know they are all chip embedded, nobody should go and try pick them, we will come and pick you”. He further claimed the delay happened ”Because it’s the first time it’s been turned on. Like when you buy a new laptop it’s now being setup,”

The slow start didn’t sit well with tech-savvy observers on social media. Many expressed concern that if a basic boot process takes minutes, the machines might struggle with heavy coding applications. There’s a growing worry that trainees will face significant hurdles if the hardware isn’t powerful enough for professional development.

For a program targeting one million people, the reliability of the equipment is everything. A successful rollout requires more than just quantity; it needs hardware that can handle the demands of modern software engineering. Whether this was a one-time fluke or a sign of lower specs remains a point of contention.
