The legal battle surrounding Chairman Wontumi has taken a surprising turn following his conviction by the Accra High Court. While the 20-year sentence for illegal mining offences is heavy, the real story lies in the claims made by his lawyer. Andy Appiah-Kubi suggests that the outcome wasn’t a surprise to the defendant at all.

On July 20, the court handed down the severe ruling after a trial focused on illegal mining activities. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, now faces two decades behind bars. This case has drawn significant attention due to the high profile of the individual involved and the nature of the crimes.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Appiah-Kubi revealed a startling conversation he had with his client before the ruling. He stated, “Chairman Wontumi had prior information that he would be convicted,” and added, “He told me the content of the judgement. He told me that he will be jailed for twenty years.” This prediction led the lawyer to advise Wontumi to prepare an immediate appeal.

The defense isn’t planning to let the verdict stand without a fight. Appiah-Kubi argues that the evidence presented during the trial didn’t justify such a harsh sentence. He believes the court overlooked a key legal principle regarding corporate identity.
The upcoming appeal will center on the nuances of company law. Appiah-Kubi explained, “The evidence on the ground does not support the judgement. Per the company law, the company is different from the owner or shareholder. This will form the basis of our appeal,” as they seek to decouple Wontumi’s personal liability from the company’s actions.
