NPA Confiscates Smuggled Petroleum Products in Volta Region Border Swoop

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) in the Volta Region has intercepted a significant quantity of unwholesome petroleum products believed to have been smuggled into Ghana from Togo. The operation, led by Regional Director Rasheed Dauda, targeted illegal hubs in Dzodze, Penyi, Wudoaba, and Aflao within the Ketu North and South Municipalities.

Backed by military protection, officials confiscated over 100 jerry cans of fuel, which subsequent tests proved to be of poor quality and unsafe for consumer use.

One suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Aflao Police Station, while authorities continue to trace other members of the smuggling syndicate. Mr. Dauda emphasized that the high quality of Ghana’s legitimate petroleum products makes it easy for the NPA to identify “table-top” fuel that has been adulterated or illegally imported. He warned that this swoop is part of a broader nationwide campaign to flush out unwholesome products that damage vehicle engines and bypass national tax systems.

The crackdown aligns with a broader mandate from NPA Chief Executive Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who has been touring the Northern, Upper East, and Ashanti regions to address similar security threats.

During these visits, Dr. Abdul-Hamid identified critical issues such as the sale of adulterated fuel in border communities like Wedana and the operation of filling stations with expired licenses. The NPA remains committed to collaborating with security agencies to ensure that only approved outlets supply fuel to the Ghanaian public.
