Counselor Edem Adofoli recently warned that features meant to protect intimate content often create a dangerous sense of security. This conversation is vital because many users trust temporary media to keep their private lives secret.
As sharing intimate content becomes more common, platforms have introduced “View Once” and disappearing messages to limit data footprints. While these tools aim to reduce the lifespan of a photo or video, they don’t eliminate the inherent risks of digital sharing. The belief that a file vanishes forever after one viewing is a misconception that can lead to lasting consequences.
During an appearance on JoyPrime’s Changes, Adofoli highlighted how easily these safeguards are bypassed. He pointed out that a person can simply use a second device to capture the content, stating, “If I have two phones right now and you send me a View Once, I can record it with the other phone.” He also noted that stolen phones, repair services, and cloud hacks can expose personal files regardless of the app used.
The reality is that once content leaves a device, the sender loses almost all control over where it goes. Adofoli suggests that the only way to truly ensure privacy is to stop creating these recordings entirely. He believes the risk outweighs the reward, simply stating, “I don’t think it’s necessary.”
Before hitting send, users should critically evaluate the trust they have in both their partner and their hardware. It isn’t just about the strength of a relationship, but also about how secure a device is from external threats. Taking a moment to pause can prevent the trauma of a potential privacy breach.
